Car manufacturers are steadily making a number of new technologies standard in many of their automobiles. The newest generations of cars now have things like backup cameras, collision avoidance systems, lane-drifting alerts, and voice command technology designed to keep the driver’s mental, cognitive, and manual attention focused on the task of driving. Unfortunately, these technologies can give some drivers a false sense of security. Drivers must remember that no matter how advanced their vehicle is, no amount of technology can 100% prevent an auto accident, and there is no substitute for safe, alert, and conscientious driving.
Voice-Command Technology: Is it Safe?
Many new vehicles have voice-command technology. This technology allows the driver to not only request a hands-free device to call any number, but can also send text messages and emails or update one’s Facebook status. But just because a driver isn’t using their hands does not mean that this isn’t a distraction.
A recent study by AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has concluded that dealing with voice command technology while driving is more distracting and dangerous than talking on a mobile phone. This danger will only increase as this technology is added to more cars. By 2018, there will be around 62 million cars on the road that have this technology.
Even though voice command devices are hands-free, a driver can develop “inattention blindness.” Research shows that performing these hands-free tasks actually takes more concentration than just using a mobile phone. While using this technology, drivers scan the road less frequently and may fail to see what is right in front of them, such as pedestrians and traffic signals.
Safe driving means being attentive to all that is going on around you. Complete attention to the road and its surrounding requires three things:
- Eyes on the road
- Hands on the wheel
- Mind on the task at hand
